North Sails partner with 151 Miglia - Trofeo Cetilar
The 10thedition of the 151 Miglia Trofeo Cetilar, one of the most important and renowned regattas in the Mediterranean, will start on 30 May. The race has a unique route, starting as always from Livorno and ending in Punta Ala, via the French island of Giraglia and the Tuscan Archipelago islands.
We are supporting the 10th edition of Italy’s 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar regatta to be completely plastic-free!
The regatta embraces sport and fun but also importantly promotes education and teaches respect for the marine environment. It sinks its own roots and reasons of being into the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, and to reinforce this crucial message it will be focus on promoting an eco-sustainable edition this year.
Exploration and innovation, key building blocks on which our brand has always been based, along with our motto “Go Beyond”, in other words go where others cannot go, are all values shared by the 151 Miglia-Trofeo Cetilar. A joint passion for the sea and its protection has created this special partnership based on an eco-sustainable edition.
As you’re probably aware, the problem of plastic in the ocean has become a major issue. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish (in weight). An alarming 8 million tons of plastic currently ends up in our oceans each year – that’s a truck load of plastic every minute. However, the good news is that it’s not too late to act.
Plastic at sea poses a fatal risk to marine fauna, including protected species. Microplastics measuring less than 5 mm are a real environmental disaster as they are swallowed by fish that then enter the food chain, threatening the lives of all animals and humans that eat them.
In 2018, the 151 Miglia - Trofeo Cetilar signed the ‘Charta Smeralda’, a code of ethics promoted by Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, sharing principals and actions to protect the sea. But joining is not enough, it’s time to act and do more.
To limit our impact on the fragile, and already compromised, marine ecosystem, this partnership will express the brand’s sense of responsibility for Ocean Conservation: a commitment already confirmed by the brand’s support for Worldrise – an environmental organisation founded by marine biologist Marisaole Bianco. The main objective of this regatta will promote plastic-free events and recreational activities to raise awareness of recycling, with the aim of moving more and more quickly towards a world (and sea) free from plastic.
For this incredible event, we will also be creating a line of high-tech premium clothing and accessories, perfect for training and the regatta. The collection will feature ergonomic cuts, high-performance materials, latest-generation treatments and will be customised with the 151 Miglia logo. This unique range will be available online and in a special sales booth at departure and arrival points.
Put the date in your diary so you don’t miss this fantastic regatta! We will see you there!
