The Hope with @Joana_Schenker – Chapter 3/3
We travelled all the way to Iceland, to see one of the most environmentally-friendly countries in the world, and end our journey with an ode to nature and our oceans.
We discovered the glaciers and ice caps of Iceland, a country at the juncture of the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. It’s a place of wild beauty, dominated by massive glaciers and dramatic landscape, azure and empty skies free from towering skyscrapers, a place where the ocean is resplendently bright. And all this makes you feel alive and reminds you that our planet is alive, too…. 70% of the air we breathe comes from the ocean but it needs our help.
We couldn’t find a travelling companion who loves the ocean as much as Joana. Seventeen years ago, Joana decided to make bodyboarding her passion and priority in her life, and she has never regretted it once. The ocean taught her more than she expected. Not only has Joana been the women’s world bodyboarding champion but she has also won four European championship titles, making her one of the most successful Portuguese athletes of all times.
Iceland has managed to create a renewable energies programme that guarantees electricity and hot water for its entire population. Over the next three years, Iceland has vowed to reduce the pollution of its coasts
significantly. How can this be done? A combined approach of reducing the use of its plastic and increasing recycling, as well as focusing efforts on single-use plastics and banning plastic fishing nets from its ocean.
We will discover the beauty of Iceland with Joana, and see that the world is still alive… and it’s up to us to keep it that way. She will travel to the point where the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans meet, where sand and lava are covered by glaciers with gentle waters.
Blue, green, grey, white, or black; smooth, ruffled, or mountainous; that ocean is not silent.” We have to listen to it.
The ocean needs our help! You are not a little wave… you are an important part of this ocean!
